This week my group had to read the next three chapters of “Holler If You Hear Me”. There were many things I liked throughout these chapters. One of them is when Mr. Mitchie introduced the book House on Mango Street to his students. He was using this book as a way for him to relate to his students in a different way because this was a book about a Mexican American woman and her journey through life. In order to get this message across clearly and precisely to his students he gathered 5 Mexican American girls to narrate the book out loud for him. These girls did not know what to expect at first but as the days went on they began to really like the project and what they were doing. They really liked the book because they said they could easily relate it back to their own lives. After they were done narrating the book the 5 girls wrote a letter to the author saying how much they enjoyed the book and asked if she would come to the school. Mr. Mitchie told the girls that there was a slim chance that the author would actually get the letter and reply but to his surprise she did get the letter and did want to come back to the school. When the author did get the chance to come to the school she was able to give the girls amazing advice she told the girls that no matter how much you want to move on with life and leave where you are now you need to always remember who they are and where they came from. I think this is very true and something that everyone should think about. Even though you may hate the situation you are in and want to leave no matter what happens you need to always be able to remember where you came from and who you are. Another part of the story I really liked was when Mr. Mitchie gave his class the music assignment where they had to go home listen to a song print the lyrics out and translate the song into sentences and words everyone can understand. The one quote that stuck out to me in this section is where he said “ many people listen to music without giving much thought to a songs meaning”. This section and this quote stuck out to me because it made me realize that there are songs out there that I can recite every word to but not know what any of those words mean which is kind of crazy to think about. Songs may sound like they don’t have a meaning at all and seem like they are just a bunch of words that sound alike put together but in reality if you look closer and in detail you will be able to see the true meanings of songs and even everything around us and that’s what i think the true meaning of this project was. I like the way Mr. Mitchie interacts with his students and all the different and unique ways he tries to connect and become closer with his students. I can’t wait to read the rest of the book and hope that it is just as good as what I have read so far.
